Restore an earlier backup of a connected site

Roll a connected site back to a saved copy after a bad update or mistake.

2 min read · Updated

Website Care keeps regular backups of each connected site. If an update breaks something, content is deleted by mistake or the site is damaged, you can put back an earlier copy.

Before you restore

A restore replaces the current site with the saved copy. Anything added since that backup, such as new orders, form entries, comments or blog posts on the connected site, may be lost. If you are unsure which backup to choose, ask our team first; they can often fix a single problem without a full restore.

CarefulIf your connected site takes orders or bookings itself, note any recent ones before restoring, because they may not exist in the older copy.

Steps

  1. Open Care → Backups and choose the site.
  2. Look through the list of backups. Each one shows its date and time, its size and whether it includes files, the database or both.
  3. Pick the most recent backup from before the problem started.
  4. Tap Restore, read the summary of what will change and confirm.
  5. Wait for the progress bar to finish. This can take from a few minutes to longer for big sites.

After the restore

We run a fresh health check straight away and show the result in Care → Reports. Open the site in a browser and test the pages that matter most, such as your home page, contact form and checkout. If something still looks wrong, use Care → Requests to tell us.

Before restoring, we also save a copy of the site as it was, so a restore can itself be undone if you picked the wrong date.

Good to knowHow many backups are kept, and for how long, depends on your Care plan.
